Berkeley Springs is a love machine! What else can you say about a tiny place that has three times as many massage therapists as lawyers and as many outstanding restaurants as any hot block in Manhattan. Since V-Day is on a Tuesday and the weekend after is all about our favorite celebrity tourist, George Washington, we're talking about love now.

Before we launch into all the Valentine's weekend and Valentine's Day specials, let's cover a few other special events.

On Saturday at 9pm, the Troubadour Lounge introduces the area to Band-A-N-A playing music for country dancing. Fun at the Star Theatre this weekend is courtesy of Tom Cruise in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" with showings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at 8pm.

Since we're at Cacapon State Park, let's start with their love machine activities. Take a Sweetheart's Escape complete with lodging, meals, entertainment and miles of mountain hiking trails. On Valentine's Day itself, they offer a special filet and crabcake dinner. Wild things may choose the Gator Tail special at Angus and Ale which is tender alligator meat coated with house seasonings, fried and served with six pepper ranch.

If Victorian elegance and a lighted Valentine Tree is more to your taste, choose the six-course, silver service, one 7pm seating Hearts Aglow dinner at Highlawn Inn with quail, salmon, delectable dessert choices and complimentary Fisher Ridge wines. Reservations are essential.

There's some rocking fun at the American Legion on Saturday at 8pm with a Valentine's Dance featuring classic rock from The Stereo Spacecraft and Potomac Sound.

Stroll around town and visit all our cool shops searching for that perfect romantic gift. Look through thousands of items at our two antique malls and several shops as well as original local and American art at several locations including the Ice House Co-op Gallery, Mountain Laurel Gallery and Heath Studio Gallery. Nature Niche is offering free Valentine gift wrapping everyday from now through 5pm on Valentine's Day. You can also print a discount coupon from their website for one item to use when you visit through February 15.

Tari's Premier Cafe is offering their famous Seafood Lovers for 2 special on Valentine's Day with complimentary champagne and delectable dessert. Lot 12 is open on Tuesday (a rare event) for a fabulous three-course dinner complete with rose petals and other romantic trimmings. There are two seatings. Reservations are recommended for both places.

What can be more romantic than shared spa treatments. The Bath House Day Spa has a couples massage. Atasia Spa offers an herbal steam room, massage, whirlpool tubs for two and facials for both men and women. If your New Year's resolution is to treat yourself better, then choose Berkeley Springs with a full array of special packages in spas and lodging places.

Evening entertainment focuses on the re-opening of the Star Theatre showing "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm complete with its famous world class popcorn.

The big news all weekend long is 150 years old. The Country Inn and Berkeley Springs State Park are locations for the 6th Annual Bath-Romney Campaign Commemoration, a battle that occurred in 1862. On Saturday morning from 9 to 11am, presentations at the Country Inn include a performance by the National Park Service official fife and drum corps. From noon to 3pm, action shifts to Berkeley Springs State Park with living history reenactments focusing on meals, drilling, weapons firing and another performance by the fife and drums. At 2:30pm Stonewall Jackson is portrayed. Special candlelight tours move from the park to the Country Inn where Stonewall Jackson is again portrayed at 6:30pm. At 8pm, the Country Inn hosts a Victorian music recital. On Sunday, reenactment activities continue at the park beginning at 11am with a period church service and including the meals, drilling and firing activities repeated from Saturday. Stonewall Jackson appears at 1:30pm followed by the fife and drums. At 3pm, there is a final presentation about the battle at the Country Inn.

Diners can choose from more than half a dozen fine dining restaurants including Panorama at the Peak which dedicates the weekend to thanking its many happy customers with 50% off all entrees. Dining hours are lunch and dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Their famous view is open all the time. Diners can also choose from tasty specials and a popular menu at Tari's Cafe, open daily for lunch and dinner. Also check out offerings at Temptations Cafe, Ambrae House, the Country Inn and Angus and Ale as well as other eateries.

People have been coming to "take the waters" of Berkeley Springs for more than a century before Stonewall Jackson made his way through the area -- and continue today. The spas of Berkeley Springs are all open and ready to provide more than 50 treatments to remove that holiday stress ranging from massage and facials to an amazing menu of scrubs, rubs and wraps. With no snow in the forecast, Berkeley Springs promises to be a popular destination for tween week celebrating -- that's tween Christmas and New Years. Shops and restaurants are open; the woods are perfect for hiking; and spas..... Well, spas are ready and waiting to relieve that holiday stress and tune you, beautify you and relax you for 2012. All the lodging places have their holiday decor still in place and many offer warm fires to bring romance to the stay.

West Virginia's only James Beard listed chef -- Damien Heath -- is satisfying his many fans by having Lot 12 Publick House open EVERY NIGHT for dinner including New Year's Eve -- and then it is vacation time. Berkeley Springs greets approaching winter with lots to do inside and out....and much of it revolves around the holiday season.

A great event for participatory fun is the Murder Mystery at Cacapon State Park on Saturday at 6:30pm. You can come for just dinner and the mystery or get a whole package that also includes a room at the lodge and buffet breakfast the next morning. No telling where you will wake up if you turn out to be the murderer -- or the victim. Music, dancing, playacting -- all led by the New World Theater Company.

The Country Inn becomes Christmas Central the next couple weekends offering carriage rides around the historic town on Saturday from noon to 5pm and Victorian Carolers from 5 to 6pm. From 1-3pm on Saturday folks can get their picture taken with Santa in Berkeley Springs State Park with all proceeds benefitting Parks & Rec. More holiday music can be heard at Union Chapel on Saturday at 7pm when the Community Choir presents its 3rd annual Home for the Holidays concert.

The Star Theatre chooses action and laughs with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller in the crime caper "Tower Heist."

It may not be holiday but it is great music -- bluegrass at Fairfax Coffee House on Saturday at 7pm played by the acoustic trio Banana Express. Rock out with The Main Street 3 at the Troubadour Lounge's Deer Hunters Dance on Saturday starting at 9pm. You don't have to be a deer hunter or even a dancer to head on out the ridge.

Needless to say, this weekend, like the next two, are all about holiday shopping -- and we have several suggestions in addition to encouraging you to explore the shopping page to see offerings of more than two dozen downtown area shops. Frog Valley Artisans, a little out of town begins their annual Christmas sale on Saturday and Sunday with all the art items from pottery and glass to metalwork and more reduced 15%. Jules Enchanting Gifts and Collectibles welcomes shoppers with excellent homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk all weekend. Sunday from 10am to 2pm marks the move of the Morgan County Farmers Market into the north end of the Old Factory Antique Mall. A special seasonal treat are the handmade evergreen wreaths. Buying local is easy in Berkeley Springs everyday especially with local artists on display in several locations from the outstanding Ice House Co-op Gallery to the equally alluring Heath Studio Gallery at the north end of town. And nothing beats an antique mall for discovering a tiny stocking stuffer. Fortunately, we have two malls as well as several individual shops -- you could spend all day just browsing for that special something from another time. One of those individual shops is Vintage Kitchen on Green St. where they are holding a Christmas Open House Friday through Monday and offering 25% off very collectible Homer Laughlin china made right here in WV.

In case you want to make a holiday gift that will stun and amaze your family and friends, plan to stay a little longer and stop by the Ice House for three great art classes. On Sunday, Baltimore paper artist David Kandel teaches two classes. From 10am to noon it's origami fabric folding and from 2-4pm, it's innovations in origami known as tessellation. On Monday from noon to 3pm, fabric artist Mary Klotz conducts a 3D paper sampler that is a "make and take" for a paper tree, pop-up word and a pop-up holiday card.

One excellent suggestion for a special holiday present is a gift certificate for spa treatments -- and you should sample the offerings first before choosing. So plan to spa hop this weekend trying out steams, baths, massages, facials and other unique bodywork treatments -- more than 50 different choices from five spas and several individual practitioners.

As you stroll through town, you'll notice historic structures including most of the downtown shops. Take the self-guided waking tour for information about what you are seeing and stop in at the museum on the second floor of the Roman Bath House to get oriented. Follow the Washington Heritage Trail National Scenic Byway for an outstanding driving tour that brings you drive-by looks at the splendid panorama of approaching winter. Speaking of panorama, that's a view not to be missed just west of town.

The outdoors remains a great place for adventure in between shopping sprees (or for the partner who rates shopping right up there with root canals as fun.) It's the final week of deer hunting season and there are plenty left as area drivers can tell you. Sleepy Creek Hunting and Fishing area is the largest public hunting ground is the county perched atop Sleepy Creek Mountain. Less deadly in intent is hiking through Cacapon State Park (off-limits to hunters) or, since the weather remains mild, playing a round or two of golf. You're guaranteed to see deer on the course.

Hungry yet? or is it still? Fortunately, our restaurants are year 'round so no worries about what is open. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner you can find the perfect menu from barbecue ribs at Earth Dog Cafe and Angus and Ale to delectable seafood at Temptations Cafe and Tari's Cafe. It's a long weekend. Berkeley Springs weather continues perfect and scenic splendors are....well.... splendid. You'll need the extra day to consume all the fun.

The big news is the 13th annual Festival of Light Psychic Fair and Alternative Healing Expo at the Ice House on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Healers and readers and vendors of magical items are spilling out the door -- more than 70 for the biggest event ever. A full roster of talks and workshops makes the weekend show even more exciting. Check the schedule, get there early, make your appointments, pick your talks and settle in to explore your present and future, inside and out. Not all the bodyworkers in town are going to be at the Festival. Evelyn Garcia is holding down the fort at Awakening Health Center on Fairfax St. and offering a great deal on an hour massage and half hour facial.

Art jumps on the magical bandwagon with the opening reception of Rare Alignments so inspired by the calendar eclipse of 11-11-11 on Friday. The reception begins at the Ice House at 7:30pm for the multi-media show focusing on the underlying mathematics of art. The exhibit has a unique video "Between the Folds" on a DVD kiosk that shows intricate origami creations and the people who make them. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm to coincide with the Festival of Light.

More art and music action starts on Thursday night at 7:30pm with an open-to-the-public Writers Forum hosted by noted WV author, poet and musician, Colleen Anderson at the Ice House. The topic is how to bridge cultural divides with readings by local writers. The music scene has two nights at the Fairfax Coffee House. On Friday at 7pm, The Lickety Split Banjo Boys play their own brand of hard-charging bluegrass, old-time mountain music and gospel while on Saturday at 7pm you can hear Chelsea McBee with Bob Keel playing acoustic, folk and Americana.

For the dancing crowd, we have both doing it and watching it this weekend. If you want to dance, head out to the Troubadour on Saturday at 9pm and go retro with the Flashbacks. If you want to watch some exceptional local dancers, go to Berkeley Springs High School at 7pm Friday and Saturday when Arts Triumphant Dance Theater stages "Behind the Scenes."

Who doesn't want to see George Clooney on the big screen? You can satisfy that desire on Friday. Saturday and Sunday nights at 8pm at the Star Theatre when he stars along with Ryan Gosline in the political thriller "The Ides of March."

A special buying opportunity on Saturday from 9am to 4pm opens Caperton Furniture Works for a factory inventory sale. Their prized handcrafted furniture can be found in stores around the country so don't miss this rare chance to pick up some bargains right from the factory. The factory is about 10 miles south of town on US522. Create your own art Saturday at Frog Valley Artisans when Veronica has a handbuilding with clay workshop from 2 to 4pm. Angus and Ale is another hot Sunday brunch spot. Temptations Cafe has introduced their new winter menu which features fresh fish frenzy on Friday, steak s pecials on Saturday and an outstanding Sunday brunch as well as great breakfast specials every day but Tuesday and Wednesday. Next door, Temptations Too Bakery is celebrating its 1-year anniversary with a 10% discount on all items except wines Thursday through Monday. Things are getting a little spooky in Berkeley Springs this weekend -- as the leaves drift off the trees and skeletal trunks and branches appear among the clusters of brilliant colors. It's a great time for hiking. Views appear less hidden by foliage and hunting season has not yet made it a threat to walk in the woods.

For a twinge of scary from the pages of history, catch the final weekend of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" at the Ice House on Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. The cast has gotten rave reviews from all who saw the first weekend. There's also a pay-what-you-can show on Thursday at 7pm. For an even bigger bargain Thursday, visit Panorama at the Peak, one of the play's sponsors, for half price organic burgers all day Thursday.

The first annual Berkeley Springs Pumpkin Walk launches on Saturday with a Halloween rock 'n' roll extravaganza, pumpkin carving and pig roast from 11am to 5pm on Washington St. next to BlackCat Music Shop. Come carve a pumpkin (scary, friendly, glamorous or whatever you choose) to be displayed along the street through Sunday afternoon. Everyone gets to vote for winners at various locations around town including Lot 12, Ambrae House, Portals, Retrodinis and Nature Niche. Costumes are encouraged.

Once you are in costume -- or not -- there are other places to go. Rankin Fitness Center holds its 3rd annual Trunk or Treat and Haunted House on Saturday all starting at 5pm with the haunted house opening at 7pm. Then head on down to Earth Dog Cafe Saturday night at 9pm for a retro Halloween party where you can dance the Monster Mash with the Flashbacks. The Troubadour is also having a Halloween Costume party and dance on Saturday night from 9pm to midnight with music by Bobby Cunningham and the Canyon River Band. There's more music on Saturday beginning at 7pm at the Fairfax Coffee House where Teporah and Ace Elijah play blues, soul and Americana.

The scare of a young man with a rare cancer is addressed in a humor-filled but poignant film at the Star Theatre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm. "50/50" stars Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Life gets a little raunchy so it's rated R. You can always stop by as you stroll the streets in the evening for some of the Star's acclaimed popcorn.

For some folks, the vastness of the night sky can be scary. Come to the public star party on Friday at 7:30pm for a look at the dark sky through the Morgan County Observatory's rare Cassegrain telescope as well as smaller scopes. There will be folks there to explain it all -- and make the sky a friendly place.

There is nothing scary about the fused glass class on Saturday afternoon from 2-4pm at Frog Valley Artisans where Garnet and Veronica guide you through creating your own candle holder.

If pumpkins and pig roasts are not enough food fun,stop by the VFW on Saturday from noon to 5pm for their annual Chili Cook-Off Contest. You don't have to enter to taste.

Reach deep to Celtic roots for a change of pace entertainment on Sunday at 3pm with the Celtic Heritage Celebration at the Presbyterian Church. Bagpipes and traditional dance and music are featured. For more history, stop by the Museum of the Berkeley Springs on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Just to reassure everyone who may not be ready to jump into costume and carve pumpkins -- non-seasonal life continues in Berkeley Springs. All the spas are soothing and healing frayed nerves and stressed bodies with treatments ranging from acupuncture and reflexology to a couple dozen different types of massage and all the spiffing up services you could want including manicures, pedicures and hair styling. Check the spa page for all your choices.

Shops are also open up and down the historic streets luring you in with enticing displays of crystals, books, Himalayan clothes and various gifts and art. Wilkes St. Wine Shop has their regular Saturday afternoon wine tasting. If you need pumpkins or fall veggies and fruits to take home, don't leave without visiting the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market on Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

And then there is the food. No doubt about -- people come to Berkeley Springs to eat as the overflowing restaurants prove every weekend. Get your reservations if you have a choice time or special place. Otherwise, know that if you cannot get a table for James Beard listed chef Damien Heath at Lot 12, you might get lucky at Tari's Cafe and sample chef Devin's excellent steaks or game hen as well as dramatic specials. The list of options is almost limitless from steak and ribs at Angus and Ale to fresh fish frenzy at Temptations to Chef Moses' Cajun and other specials at the Country Inn. Berkeley Springs proves its title as one of America's best small art towns this weekend with everything from world class dance and a play opening to more than a dozen artists on display in their natural habitats -- their studios. Even better is Mother Nature getting into the act with splashy -- and artistic -- displays of colors on hillsides and along the roads.

Let's start with the Fall Berkeley Springs Studio Tour. You can pick up the self-guiding booklet and map at several downtown locations including the Visitors Center and the Ice House Gallery where you can also see samples of many of the artists on the tour. While at the Ice House, don't miss the Warm and Wearable special gallery show which also includes several of the tour artists. Tour hours are Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm and artists welcome visitors not only with great shopping opportunities but also edible treats. Remember, when you buy on the Studio Tour you know you are buying both local and American.

The art of dance is showcased on Friday evening at 7:30pm when the world famous percussive dance ensemble Footworks takes the stage at Berkeley Springs High School auditorium. They bring traditional Appalachian music and dance to Berkeley Springs from a stint with "Riverdance" in London and a tour of Japan for the Smithsonian Institution.

Also on Friday at 7:30pm is the opening night of the Ice House Theater production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible." This dramatic and compelling story of the 17th century Salem witch trials can also be seen on Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. While in town, support the play's sponsors: Earth Dog Cafe, Fairfax Coffee House and Panorama at the Peak.

Speaking of the Fairfax Coffee House, they have two nights of music this weekend. Friday at 7pm is the hard-driving bluegrass and gospel sound of The Lickety Split Banjo Boys while on Saturday at 7pm, hear the rock n' folk, swing, blues tunes of The Shifters. Ambrae House now has a full-service bar along with live music both nights. The biggest music treat in town this weekend is on Sunday from 4 to 8pm when the legendary rock and blues band from Washington, DC -- The Nighthawks -- "get down" at Earth Dog Cafe.

There is something for everyone in Berkeley Springs. On Friday night at 7:30pm, star gazers are invited to the Morgan County Observatory's public star party featuring both the Observatory's giant Cassegrain telescope as well as numerous smaller ones focused on the gorgeous (and dark) fall skies. At the Star Theatre, baseball and movie fans can enjoy Brad Pitt in "Moneyball," on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.

Our final special event mention goes to Highlawn Inn where you can enjoy the rare treat of a silver service Celebrate WV dinner with gourmet food and WV wines on Saturday evening at 7pm. Reservations are a must and there are a couple tables remaining. For true fans of pampering, Highlawn Inn B&B is an ideal choice.

One of the best parts of the Studio Tour is that it takes you throughout the county on the peak weekend for leaf peeping. You can travel well-maintained roads from Cacapon State Park -- where there is great hiking and a top-quality 18-hole public golf course -- past the Panorama Overlook where you can stop for exceptional local food at Panorama at the Peak -- all the way to the historic Paw Paw Tunnel, largest man-made structure on the C&O Canal. The ride is also perfect for motorcycles with welcome mats out at several fine eateries including Panorama, Tari's Cafe and Angus and Ale. The Best Western-Berkeley Springs Inn has special parking area s especially for motorcyclists.

Don't miss out on all our usual attractions just because there is so much special this weekend.
