Berkeley Springs celebrates Memorial Day with so much to do that you'll need the long holiday weekend to enjoy it all. Art, quilts, parades, homecoming and more make up the list of special activities.

This is Spring Studio Tour with three days to visit more than 20 artists at 16 locations in and around the Berkeley Springs area. You can pick up tour guide booklets at various locations around town or begin your tour at the Ice House where many of the artists regularly show and sell their work. Tour hours are 10am to 5pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; the Ice House opens at 11am each day. Included on the tour are art works from the amusing oil paintings of Jonathan Heath to the glass, pottery and metalwork found at Frog Valley Artisans. There is a piece of art door prize at every studio and a "sheep to shawl spin-in and knit-in" at Pocket Meadow Farm.

Should you finish up the Studio Tour early in Monday, head back to the Ice House for the slamdown finale of the Yard Square Quilts Silent Auction. Six weeks of online bidding concludes from 4 to 5pm when final bids can be placed by phone, in person or online. All 46 of the Yard Squares are on display all weekendlong hanging around with their bigger cousins in the Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild annual Quilt Show which fills the Ice House Gallery. No one need go home without buying a piece of spectacular fabric art.

Come early on Friday and you'll have the opportunity to catch the final day of the Smithsonian's "New Harmonies" American roots music exhibit also at the Ice House and open from 10am to 5pm. There's live roots music too this weekend. Friday night at 8pm, the Fairfax Coffee House presents Irish American folk music by Garryowen, a group that features Neil Foley, a very gifted fiddle player from County Limerick, Ireland. Second generation roots music is featured at the Ice House on Saturday at 3pm in a fascinating lecture by West Virginia University music scholar and public radio personality, Chris Wilkinson. His talk about big band jazz bands and black West Virginia during the 30s and early 40s is filled with wild stories and authentic recordings of the bands and their music. Sunday, the music turns classical as notable pianist Peter Basquin performs at the Presbyterian Church on the Hill at 4pm.

On Saturday night you can dance. The Country Inn invites you to return to the 50s with a Sock Hop. From 6:30 to 8pm there is a 1950s diner-style buffet and a soda jerk. The music starts at 8pm and it's played by the popular local band -- The Flashbacks! Come dressed in your 50s best for a costume contest. If country dancing is your thing, head on out to the Troubadour on Saturday night for live music.

If being an audience is what you want this weekend, the Star Theatre is showing Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck in "State of Play," a political thriller. Showtimes are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm. As the "New York Post" notes in their listing of Berkeley Springs as magic #22 summer getaway destination, La Luna Gallery and Wine Bar provides a perfect opportunity to sip fine vintages and watch the lights of the Star across the street, imagining you're in Manhattan only without the traffic and people. La Luna introduces both longer hours and new dining opportunities this weekend. They are open from 2-11pm on Friday and their standard 3 to 11pm on Saturday. Sunday has brunch from 11am to 3pm then new light fare menu from 3 to 11pm.

There's splashing outdoor fun as both the lake (with sandy beach) at Cacapon State Park and the swimming pool in Berkeley Springs State Park open for the season. For dining that goes with all day swimming, stop at Tony's Butcher Block for fabulous take-out sandwiches or stop for ice cream and lite fare in town at Creekside Creamery. Also at Cacapon State Park this weekend is an all-day Saturday (9:30am to 3pm) Save Our Streams workshop that reviews the bioassessment approach. Cacapon State Park also has a family restaurant in the lodge that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

A different type of outdoor fun can be had by shopping the Farmers Market on Sunday, in the heart of town from 10am to 2pm with fabulous fresh produce and prepared foods.

For a change of all paces this weekend, visit Sage Moon and Awakening Health Center where psychic Joan Campbell offers Soul Calling Psychic Readings or Soul Alignment Intensives (DNA Repatterning) on Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Sunday from 1 to 4pm, Joan facilitates a workshop on Repatterning Negative DNA. While there, try the tasty vegetarian fare at Oasis Cafe.

This is definitely the weekend to be traveling throughout the county, both on the Studio Tour and to make your way over the mountain to Paw Paw where they are celebrating the annual Homecoming weekend. The big fun is on Saturday. A Memorial Day service is held at the Memorial Monument in the center of town at 11am and then the parade fills the downtown streets at 1pm. While you are in Paw Paw, head across the Potomac for s hike through the Paw Paw Tunnel, largest manmade structure on the C&O Canal and have lunch in town at Grandma's. You can start your drive west with a stop at Panorama at the Peak for outstanding lunch or on the way back for dinner. They also have a Sunday brunch -- and always the best view in the region.

Should you have a spare second or two from all these special events, remember the spas, the museum, all the shops and of course, eating. You can check out all the details in these areas on our Website.
