The following information was disseminated by the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
Calling all girlfriends -- this weekend is for you! We've got it all planned to be irresistible and anticipate gangs of girlfriends roaming the streets tasting wine, soaking up spa treatments and invading shops all in search of a good time. Come as friends, cousins, college roommates, neighborhood moms -- we don't care what the excuse is. Just gather up girlfriends and head to Berkeley Springs for the fun we have planned. Check out the detailed schedule on our site -- then read on for the highlights.
We don't know what possessed everyone this year -- this is the 8th annual Hey, Girlfriend! weekend -- but wine tasting is what they think girls want. Fortunately Berkeley Springs is a safe place to bounce from tasting to tasting -- and Saturday is the day. Lot 12 invites women vintners to offer their wine for sampling on the porch and provide an array of cheeses and other treats from 1 to 3pm. There is a fee. From 1 to 4pm, Wilkes Street Wine Shop is having a tasting and offers the chance to buy your favorite to take home. Jules, Enchanting Gifts and Collectibles starts her wine and treats party at 5 and continues through 8pm. For those girlfriends lucky enough to get a room at the exquisite Highlawn Inn, your hostess, Sandy, has a wine and cheese party panned for Inn guests from 2-4pm. If this is not enough wine, all the cool restaurants and cafes in town have extensive and well-thought out wine lists and La Luna Wine Bar stays open late. If pink girly drinks are more your style, then Tari's Cafe is the place for you on Saturday afternoon when Tiara Time at Tari's clocks in and special pink drinks are only $3.
The next big category of fun is art -- including music. Tari's Cafe is once again the place to be with a sidewalk art sale on Saturday where the local women's shelter will be giving out free Friendship bracelets. The Delectable Mountains Quilt Show is hanging at the Ice House filling the gallery, halls and Paradox Room with fabulous fabric art, much of it for sale. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday 11am to 5pm. If you want to MAKE art then head out to Pocket Meadow Farm for a free lace making workshop on Saturday starting at 2pm -- it doesn't get much girlier than that. Sunday, Art in the Park runs from 11am to 4pm. There is other art shopping all weekend long at Mountain Laurel Gallery, Cathy's Art. Mostly Woven and Heath Gallery.
Then there is the entertainment side of art. Saturday evening at 8pm, Brad Wolfe and Teddy Shea play classical, jazz and Latin rhythms on guitar and keyboard in the intimate setting of the Fairfax Coffee House's wine gallery -- get that, more wine girls! and coffee drinks should you need them. Sunday is a hallmark Girlfriend event at Tari's Cafe where songstress Cindy Born hosts Torch and Twang, an all-girl jam session from 2-4pm. The Troubadour has karaoke on Friday -- and it's steak night -- and country dancing to the live band V-6 on Saturday beginning at 9pm.
Matthew McConaughey is at the Star Theatre Friday through Sunday at 8pm. Not live -- on the big screen in "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past." All weekendlong you can ooh and aah over the multi-generational cast of "Peter Pan" including a rotating schedule of four Tinker Bells and a continual flutter of house fairies. The show is an Ice House Theater Project production at Berkeley Springs High School. There are shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm.
Magic is available this weekend on Saturday when you can "Look Into Your Future" with a pair of readers (cards and stars) at the Star Theatre from noon to 4pm. The mini-readings are 20 minutes long.
While shopping is always special in the compact but diverse downtown, this weekend there are also shopping specials. Homeopathy Works has discounts on all their medical remedies including several important to girls. Just around the corner, Recycling Works offers 10% off books to girlfriend groups when each buys a book. Creekside Creamery goes all out this weekend not only providing outstanding ice cream treats but also with a series of samplings, discounts, drawings and free gifts. One of the newest shops on Green Street over looking town, The Vintage Kitchen, is offering 15% off all books plus daily door prizes.
Spas are a big reasons girlfriends come year round to Berkeley Springs, On Saturday and Sunday, Have Table Will Travel can come to your location and provide two massages back to back, with a discount on the second one. Master masseur Michael Pushkin is offering all girls $5 off his incredible customized massage. Stay at Sunset Mountain Farm this weekend and there is a discount on inhouse massage.
We know lots of girlfriends choose nature fun so here's a chance to learn about the natural history of dragonflies in West Virginia, the characteristics of each dragonfly family, and dragonfly behavior on Saturday from 9am to noon at Cacapon State Park. The park also has an outstanding golf course, lake with sand beach and miles of mountain hiking trails.
If staying up late and chatting with your girlfriends is high on your list -- well, it makes the Country Inn's list too. Stay at this charming intown historic inn and not only can you leave your car and walk everywhere, enjoy great food in their dining room and have outstanding spa treatments in their spa BUT you also can be part of their Pajama Party on Saturday night from 11pm to 1am complete with movies and popcorn. All this fun comes in a single price package so check it out. Berkeley Springs Cottage Rentals offers free early check-in and late check-out so you can extend your fun. Cabin by O'Brien's is treating guests to a free herbal bath in an outdoor bathtub plus stay a 3rd night at 50% off.
In between all the special events are the standard attractions of this historic spa town. Girlfriends can assemble their own spa tour, sampling among 53 different body treatments at five spas or treatment centers ranging from European facials and La Stone massage to acupuncture and mud wraps. There's a Farmers Market on Sunday from 10am to 2pm in the center of town. Dining choices are varied including tasty Sunday brunch at Panorama at the Peak and La Luna.
Where to stay depends on how many girlfriends are in the group and whether you choose town or countryside. There are state park cabins, vacation homes with whirlpool tubs, log houses on a mountain top, in-town cottages and Victorian B & Bs with marvelous breakfasts and first-rate service. If there are several of you, and you want a well-appointed intown house with pool table, whirlpool tubs, piano and full kitchen PLUS porch and back deck -- we recommend Berkeley House.
