This Week in Berkeley Springs, WV June 15-21, 2009
The following information was disseminated by the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
Berkeley Springs celebrates West Virginia Day this weekend with a nod to its own much earlier beginnings.
The Museum of the Berkeley Springs has the opening of its newest exhibit on Saturday at 11am. The exhibit marks the formation of the town, known as Bath officially, in 1776. It also highlights the destructive fires that have been a peculiar form of urban renewal in this small resort town over the centuries. There is a brief presentation about the history and exhibit. The Museum is open from 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. There's plenty of other exhibits to see related to the springs from historic bathing suits to the geology that creates the famed mineral waters. The Museum is located on the second floor of the 1815 Roman Bath House in Berkeley Springs State Park.
Music is part of the celebration on Saturday. The Country Inn flaunts its long West Virginia roots (think Hatfield-McCoy) with a country music/country cookin' event. There's a southern dinner buffet from 6:30 to 8pm followed by Opry Night at 8pm featuring the Incredible Driftin' Whistle Pigs. Across the park at 8pm, there's more roots music with the Lickety Split Bluegrass Band playing traditional bluegrass and gospel at Fairfax Coffee House (which also has beer and wine.) The Troubadour Lounge also has a live band starting at 9pm on Saturday playing for country dancing. Local music starts during the week with a jam session at Earth Dog Cafe on Wednesday night and one at Tari's Cafe, hosted by Thomas Roue, on Thursday at 8pm.
For entertainment fans who choose the future over the past, check out the Star Theatre which has some of both. It's a vintage 1940s movie house, this weekend showing Star Trek Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm. Whatever millennium you select, the Star has the best popcorn.
Even before Berkeley Springs was West Virginia, it was a famous spa. George Washington and hordes of colonial notables came to "take the waters" and be healed. That healing is still the main product in town produced by five spas and treatment centers, individual practitioners, one of the world's largest manufacturers of homeopathic medical remedies and the famous warm mineral springs still pumping out more than 1000 gallons per minute of warm water. If historical bathing is your ideal, dabble your toes in the springpools in Berkeley Springs State Park in the center of town or soak in the Roman Bath House. For contemporary spas pleasures, pick and choose among acupuncturists, reflexologists and massage therapists using more than 20 different approaches. There are licensed technicians doing facials and pedicures, wraps, rubs and scrubs. You can spend a day at a single spa like Atasia or the Country Inn's Five Senses Spa or flit from place to place sampling them all. There's even a way to get a massage at your lodging place from Have Table Will Travel. Learn a little about the benefits of massage therapy on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30pm at the County Inn from chiropractor, Dr. Kulus. At 10am every Saturday, Homeopathy Works offers a free beginning class and tour. Study the spa page to find out what each locale has to offer.
Food and wine are perfect accompaniments to spa activity. Sample wines to take home at the Wilkes St. Wine Shop. Tari's Cafe introduces a new lunch and dinner menu as well as an extensive list of 65 different vintages. La Luna Gallery and Wine Bar has fresh tapas and wine by the bottle specials Friday from 5 to 11pm and Saturday from 3 to 11pm. On Sunday, they match their wines with a tasty brunch. Fresh local foods are another part of Berkeley Springs; healthy offerings. Both Lot 12 and Panorama at the Peak have owners and chefs who are at the forefront of the "Eat Local, Eat Fresh" movement in the region and provide high quality meals. Two new eateries have opened with vegetarian menus: Rose Cafe and Soupity Salad Express. Try them for lunch or late afternoon dining. On Sunday, from 10am to 2pm, the guaranteed fresh local food prize goes to the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market set up in the center of town. Reputed to be the best in the region, it offers everything from fresh produce to delicious gourmet take-home dining from Lot 12.
The list of attractions continues and includes golf, hiking, horseback riding and shooting at Cacapon State Park or shopping for treasures among more than 20 different downtown shops, galleries and antique malls. A new shop in town, Vintage Kitchen, has a sale on history books, candles and select group of WV china to celebrate this weekend.
Nature Niche is celebrating Father’s Day all weekend with a 15% discount on any one item with proof of fatherhood. All sorts of proof is acceptable and fatherhood also includes being that special person to animals.
