This Week in Berkeley Springs, WV September 28-October 4, 2009
The following information is from the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
Glorious autumn in Berkeley Springs. Dogwood sport reddish leaves and red berry clusters. Maple are turning a range of fall colors. Days are warm and sunny; nights cool with a bite in the air. It is time for long soaks in warm mineral baths, longer hikes along the ridges and streams and quiet afternoons waiting for the fish to bite. In between, there is more glamourous fun from music to cars.
Friday evening at 7:30pm finds Woody Guthrie at the Ice House in the person of master West Virginia musician, Mick Souter. The concert features an array of the familiar songs from America's most famous folksinger, Woody Guthrie. The Sleepy Creek Childrens' Choir accompanies Souter on probably the most famous -- "This Land is Your Land." The Guthrie concert concludes peace month at the Ice House -- at least the performance part of it. The "bringing peace home" gallery show hangs through the weekend with Ice House Gallery hours being Friday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm.
There's more folk music with a Celtic touch on Saturday when PeatFire performs at the Fairfax Coffee House at 8pm. Local music makes an appearance at several locations throughout the weekend. Cindy Born hosts Jam Nite at Tari's Cafe beginning at 8pm on Thursday. Earth Dog Cafe has music most nights on the weekend while the Troubadour Lounge serves up karaoke on Friday.
The Star Theatre is showing Brad Pitt in "Inglorious Basterds" this weekend along with their famous popcorn. Showtimes at 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Star serves another alluring purpose on Saturday from noon to 4pm when a card reader and an astrologer offer mini-readings of your future.
Other fun activities this weekend include a Chili Cook-Off at the VFW from noon to 4pm on Saturday. Vintage cars are the big attractions on Saturday when the Mountain State Cruisers celebrate their 20th anniversary with a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Cruise-In at the American Legion just north of town from 1 to 5pm. There will be food, door prizes and lots of great cars to ogle.
Highlawn Inn has a delectable special this weekend offering a package that includes two nights of lodging with full country breakfast each morning as well as an incredible silver service dinner for two on Saturday night. It's a rare treat.
Shopping is another exciting fall attraction with Vintage Kitchen serving up cookies and cider along with sale prices on select items. Open until 8pm on Friday, as well as Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm (4pm on Sunday.) Sunday finds local produce overflowing in the square in the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market open from 10am to 2pm. Across the street is Art in the Park. There are a long list of eateries ready to indulge your every whim from breakfast all day to wine and late night treats. Checking our dining page for the full list and menus.
Let's talk hiking and then for relief from the aches and pains from hiking -- spas.
Cacapon State Park has a full range of hiking opportunities from walking around the 18-hole golf course hitting a little white ball and claiming that it's hiking to an array of mountain trails. Most exciting is the 12 mile trail, mostly flat, along the top of the mountain. It begins from a spectacular overlook in the park and ends at several remarkable rock slabs and another amazing view. The Tuscarora Trail is a more difficult climb up Sleepy Creek Mountain and past the 200 acre lake. It can be accessed at Spruce Pine Hollow Park along WV9 east of town and allowably crosses a short distance on private land. The C&O Canal towpath is the ultimate flat trail and has at its western end, the Paw Paw Tunnel, largest manmade structure on the Canal. While in Paw Paw, try the under-development Western Maryland Rail Trail.
Once finished with your hikes, you need a soak and massage to take away any muscle strain. Head back into Berkeley Springs and take your choice. A half hour soak in the historic Roman Baths in Berkeley Springs State Park guarantees no aches. Equally effective soaks can be found at the Country Inn's Five Senses Spa and Atasia Spa both of which boast tubs with whirlpools. Atasia also has an incredible steam room. When you want hands-on rubbing out of those aches, select from a full menu of massage types at all three of these spas as well as the Bath House Day Spa, Awakenings Health Center and the Healing Vessel. Individual practitioners include Michael Pushkin and Have Table Will Travel which will deliver a massage therapist directly to your lodging place. Check the spa page for all the other treatments available from rubs and scrubs to manicures and pedicures. After all, nothing ruins your nails more than scrabbling up a rocky slope.
Another solution for your aches and pains is to comb through the various lodging options and find those -- and there are lots -- that have whirlpool tubs in their rooms. Other amenities include everything from marvelous breakfasts and Victorian trimmings to working fireplaces and wooded yards. Pick the perfect pillow for your head -- and come enjoy the most ideal season of the year.
