This Week in Berkeley Springs, WV July 12-18, 2010
The following information is from the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
Berkeley Springs blends dogs, art and music into one fun time this weekend -- a weekend that with the annual Firemen's Carnival actually launches the festivities on Tuesday. This is the week to come for the week especially if you have kids.
Along with rides, games and carnival food every night, the Firemen's Carnival has a powerhouse line-up of bands beginning with the retro Flashbacks on Tuesday. If you like them on Tuesday, you'll love them on Friday when they play the once a month Friday night concert outside at the Troubadour Lounge. On Wednesday, it's the The Incredible Driftin' Whistle Pig followed on Thursday by the Nashville-branded Davisson Brothers Band. Friday is a karaoke contest and Saturday, two performers: Morgan County Line and Kevin Booth's Tribute to Elvis.
So, where do the dogs come in? They're part of the art in "Putting on the Dog," a special exhibit opening at the Ice House Gallery on Friday at 7:30pm with a meet-the-artist reception. More than 20 artists use every imaginable medium to portray the pooches they love. There will even be portrait artists there you can contract to paint your own doggie masterpiece. The fun actually begins with an Artwalk from 5 to 7:30pm. Mountain Laurel Gallery has a special reception and two floors of fine American arts and crafts while Nature Niche steals the show with their outdoor doggie cafe serving both treats for the dogs and dog-shaped biscuits for the people. Plenty of fun nature-related items to buy in this shop especially with all dog items 25% off this weekend. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm in case you miss the opening.
Back to the music (you mean there's more???) The big concert is in Berkeley Springs State Park on Saturday at 5:30pm when the Morgan Arts Council presents the award-winning Woodshedders, a fabulous acoustic quintet playing what can only be called: mountain jazz. You'll love the music. You'll love the scene. Dress down so you can splash in the springpools. After the concert in the Park on Saturday, grab a bite to eat and drink at Ambrae House, where wine is the thing, there's an excellent outdoor bar, appetizers and entrees to die for -- plus specials for everyone who went to the concert in the park. There's another stop to make on Saturday night -- The Fairfax Coffee House features Glenn Pearson and Friends playing the best of the American Songbook and show tunes starting at 8pm.
Thursday, after you've ridden the rides at the carnival, head on in to Tari's Cafe where Jim Fredo hosts the long-running Jam Nite at Tari's Cafe complete with food specials. On Sunday afternoon, it's back out to the Troubadour for the Annual Gaylen "June" B Shaw Jr. Memorial Music, Picnic and Auction to benefit Hospice of the Panhandle all starting at 1pm.
Even this week's movie at the vintage Star Theatre has music -- sort of. It has way more laughs though. See "Get Him to the Greek" at 8pm Thursday through Sunday nights. It's rated R for raunchy (but hilarious.)
Let's not forget local food, available at the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market -- Thursday at 2pm and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. In Case you like your local produce served up in tasty dishes -- and who wouldn't -- try Panorama at the Peak where it's Peach and Blueberry week featuring everything from frozen margaritas in peach and blueberry to pork chop with peach and chipolte chutney. Top it off with peach and blueberry bread pudding and house-made peach ice cream. There are plenty of other dining locales since you'll be here for the week -- check them all out on our dining page.
Remember, you're here for the week. There's music, art, outdoor fun with pool and lake swimming, great shopping, relaxing spas and excellent eating.
Now we need to find you a bed -- not that it's a problem with more than 100 rooms choices of various types from cabins and vacation homes to the historic Country Inn and charming B&Bs. Speaking of B&Bs, we want to introduce one of our newest -- Bella Mattina -- (that means Good Morning in Italian.) Tucked away just a mile out of town, these wine lovers offer their educated selection of a complimentary bottle of wine with a two night stay.
Berkeley Springs wraps all its wonders in a friendly, safe and affordable package. Plus, it's closer than anywhere!
