This Week in Berkeley Springs August 2-8, 2010
The following information is from the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
It's a wall of music in Berkeley Springs, a tsunami of sound ...and it comes in all varieties and several different locales.
Most exotic is the Morgan Arts Council's concert in Berkeley Springs State Park on Saturday at 5:30pm presenting Sviraj, a quartet of musicians playing the music of the Balkans and southern Europe. It's lively and rhythmic played with rare instruments -- and it is perfect to dance to. That's why you should come at 4pm for the JAM SESSION! Bring an instrument. Bring your dancing shoes. Learn the steps, learn about the instruments, play along! It's all free for the giving. Afterwards, head across the park to the Fairfax Coffee House where at 8pm, noted musician Billy Thompson shows the heartfelt power of blues, funk and jazz. The Fairfax Coffee House also has music on Friday night at 8pm presenting fresh new songs in the roots tradition by 3 Penny Acre with David Glaser.
The Troubadour Lounge hosts two nights of the Carpenter Ants direct from Charleston, the WV Music Hall of Fame and Mountain Stage. Friday it's an outdoor concert in Troubador Park starting at 8:30; Saturday it's dancing inside (or maybe out) starting at 9pm. Both nights the music continues to midnight. On Saturday in town on the street. More on the street and in the alley music is the First Year Anniversary Celebration of Black Cat Music Shop. Bands, jams, prizes and drawings from 11am to 5pm on Saturday.
Big excitement with the chance for profit can be found Tuesday through Saturday at the Country Inn. The Inn provides free admission for the public to the Treasure Hunters Roadshow. They buy gold, jewelry, watches, military items and more -- on the spot. From 9 to 6pm through the week; close at 4pm on Saturday. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Inn while you are there. Ask about their spa packages if you choose to stay.
More fortune, this time in the telling, can be found at the Star Theatre, Saturday from noon to 2pm where min-readings are available using cards, stars and runes. As part of its regular movie business, the Star is showing "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" on Thursday through Sunday nights at 8pm. If romantic teen vampires and werewolves are not on your to-see list, stop by for the world class popcorn instead.
While folks are jamming music downtown on Saturday, you can be on the mountainside jamming with Italian food in Villa Firenze's learn, cook and eat class. There are a few rare openings left. As for shopping -- people are selling their treasures at the Country Inn but there are plenty of places for you to buy treasures including Berkeley Springs and Old Factory antique malls, several shops including the newly re-opened Retrodini featuring all things '50s. The RAG Shop has lots of great recycled items and is now open 10 to 6pm Thursday through Monday. Come early for Thrifty Thursday where wardrobe items are only $1.
Make sure you hit the Farmers Market at least once getting fresh fruits and vegetables plus lots more on Thursday afternoon to Sunday from 10am to 2pm. You cannot miss them in the heart of town. Local restaurants echo the local produce you can find on the street. For Panorama at the Peak this weekend is all about corn from corn soup and corn and crab cakes to corn on the cob. Temptations has a fresh fish frenzy on Friday evening and Ambrae House has a half price happy hour from 4 to 6pm most everyday. Don't miss a meal at Tari's Cafe or Lot 12....with all the great places in town to sample, make sure you get three good meals a day.
These are only the special, this-weekend-only things to do. There's a long list of other fun activities to enjoy and we invite you to explore the website discovering spas, shops and dozens of places to eat not to mention outdoor fun ranging from lake swimming and golf to mountain hiking and motorcycling.
There are also plenty of great places to stay depending on your list of must-haves whether those are hot tubs on the deck overlooking a panoramic mountain view or elegant Victorian bedchamber with a view of the Castle. It's all available for you. Follow a tradition 250 years old and escape to the warm springs this August.
