This Week in Berkeley Springs November 8-14, 2010
The following information is from the Travel Berkeley Springs office:
Some weekends defy description and this is one of them.
The big news on both Saturday and Sunday is the 12th annual Festival of Light Psychic Fair and Alternative Healing Expo. Sixty readers, bodyworkers and vendors under one roof at the Ice House from 10am to 4pm both days. In addition to having everything from your palm to your aura read for what it can tell about your future, there are also a half dozen lectures each day. This is a VERY popular event so come early. You can come and go during the day for only one admission.
Friday at 7:30pm, the Ice House Gallery is the center of the universe for the opening of "Bountiful Harvest," a special gallery show with more than a dozen artists offering work related to -- the harvest, meaning food, meaning everything from gorgeous pottery casseroles and teapots, to paintings of vegetables so alluring you'll be trying to lick the canvas (don't do it!) The show hangs through New Years and gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm. This weekend you can shop while waiting for your appointment at Festival of Light.
Everyone is partying with live music. Friday night at the Troubadour "Detour Road" plays and Saturday is the not to be missed party marking Blue Eyed Soul's first appearance there. This local group has it all -- hot music and hotter girl singers. They start at 8:30pm. If you yearn for something mellower in the music department, try Fairfax Coffee House on Saturday night at 8pm when our favorite fiddler and general all-round outstanding old timey musician, Joe Herrmann brings along guest musician, David McGlaughlin for an evening of traditional Appalachian/bluegrass music.
For those who like their nightlife straight from Hollywood, the Star Theater is showing the most talked about movie of the year -- The Social Network -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.
Two things have inspired bonus offers this weekend. Mention the Festival of Light to your waitress at Tari's Cafe and you'll get a cup of their famous cream of crab soup, free. River House is offering free passes to the festival to anyone staying in their cottage along the Cacapon River. Highlawn is also offering free festival passes to their guests as well as a 10% discount on the room. The only catch is that you have to mention the festival and this newsletter. Several lodging places in town are celebrating and honoring veterans on Thursday by offering lodging specials. The Country Inn has a limited number of its rooms that will be FREE to veterans on their day. Sleepy Creek Mountain Inn and the Manor Inn are also participating but are already out of rooms. They promise that next year there will be more and better offers so call and get on their list for 2011.
We are proud of the diverse and interesting shopping we have in town. This weekend two neighboring shops are having a special sale. Retrodini is celebrating the arrival of winter clothes with a 15% off sale of all vintage coats and jackets. If you're a fan of the '50s, this is a shop you should not miss. Next door on the main street, at Lion's Lair drop by and enjoy 10% off all fair trade product lines. When purchasing fair trade items you are supporting programs that encompass education, job opportunities, health and well being as well as personal development for women and children. Purchasing these products makes a difference!.
Just outside of town Frog Valley Studios is having a Roman candle workshop on Saturday at 1:30. The Berkeley Springs Farmers Market has moved into the Mill Building near the Old Factory Antique Mall so you can still shop Sunday from 10am to 2pm for local produce.
One final word about food -- ooops, actually two. Panorama at the Peak is celebrating pie in all its forms from prime rib, veal and Shepherds Pie to Wild Berry pie with lemon crust. Their meats are organic and local.
The BEST food news in a while, is the much-anticipated opening of Temptations, Too. It's a bona fide bakery located right next door to the popular restaurant, Temptations.
There are plenty of rooms to choose from in this, the country's first spa. Some of them have whirlpool tubs others have wood stoves or fireplaces to take the brisk edge off the air. Look through all the listings to find the one place that seems made for you.
Whether you come to learn the future or come to appreciate the rich past of Berkeley Springs, make sure of one thing -- that you come this weekend.
