This Week in Berkeley Springs, WV May 30-June 5, 2011
Girlfriend -- this weekend in Berkeley Springs is all about you and the fun you can have with the other girls.
It all starts Friday on the street from 5-7:30pm, the action includes antique cars, street food, 50's music, hula hoop and twist contest in Berkeley Springs State Park. The fun moves inside after that with Opening Night of "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," a Steve Martin play staged by the Ice House Theater Project at 7:30pm at the Ice House. Other showtimes are Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 3pm. You can see Picasso live one night and the other enjoy "Water for Elephants" at the vintage Star Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.
Wine is a favorite girlfriend beverage and it is celebrated all weekendlong. Saturday from 1 to 5pm Wilkes Street Wine Shop hosts their weekly tasting. Girlfriends are invited to party with wine and treats at Jules from 5 to 8pm surrounded by her enchanting gifts and collectible. Lot 12 focuses on female winemakers and their wines from South Africa, Spain, California and other locations all available by the glass all weekend along with Chef Damien's usual outstanding food. Stay at the exquisite Highlawn Inn and there is a special Saturday afternoon wine and cheese tasting from 2 to 4 for guests of the Inn.
Art and magic are available in abundance. The Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild show and sale overflows the Ice House Gallery in to other rooms and halls Friday through Sunday 11am to 5pm. Members of the guild are on hand throughout the show to talk about the art of quilting. Art sales outside start on Saturday on the sidewalk at Tari's Cafe with Wild Women Art featuring local art as well as gently used purses and cookbooks. On Sunday from 11am to 4pm, Art in the Park offers local art for sale.
You can find the magic in special future readings. On Saturday at the Star Theatre from noon to 4pm hosts two experienced local star and card readers, Jeanne Mozier and Joyce Morningstar. From 1-5pm both Saturday and Sunday, Panorama at the Peak hosts Donna Gatti's Angel Readings. Learn to make Tree Spirits from clay with Veronica @ Frog Valley Artisans combines art and magic. Tiara Time at Tari's on Sunday afternoon invites girls to don their tiaras, wrap their boas and settle in with girly pink cocktails.
Eating and drinking are highlighted with half-price drink ladies special at the Country Inn's tavern on Saturday. A true girlfriend bucket list event is at Villa Firenze where on Saturday you can take an Italian cooking class and then enjoy the multi-course feast at Villa Firenze. When listing favorite girlie foods, strawberries and chocolate rate high. Angus and Ale features A Girl's Best Friend: chocolate fondue and champagne with strawberries. Panorama at the Peak hosts its second annual Strawberry Feast featuring everything from Strawberry Margaritas and Daiquiris and chilled strawberry soup to strawberry soup, salad and pork entree. Of course, there are strawberry desserts: bread pudding and homemade ice cream. Visit Sunday's Farmers Market in the Square and take home some great local produce.
The main attribute that makes Berkeley Springs Girlie Capital of West Virginia are the spas -- and more than 53 different body treatments. The Bath House Day Spa offers girlfriends a complimentary paraffin dip with any skin care or pedicure as well as the Friend & Me Massage, a great way to spend time with a friend. Also on Fairfax St. facing the park and springs is Awakening Health Center where Marti Sikes offers $1/minute reflexology treatments this weekend. From 3 to 5 pm on Saturday at Awakenings, naturopath Ben Risby-Jones talks about "Life Essences – Awakening to Healing."
And what gang of girls does not shop? Shopping specials abound this weekend with Nature Niche offering a 25% discount on garden flags and spinners. Vintage Kitchen has sales on tea sets, girlfriend cards and gift sets. Berkeley Springs Books discounts 10% all women's self help and fiction books. Creekside Creamery is a girlfriend bazaar of its own with everything from tastings, sales and free gifts to reduced fat blueberry cheesecake frozen yogurt
Where to stay depends on how many girlfriends are in the group, whether you choose town or countryside, and what indulgences you want. There are state park cabins, vacation homes with whirlpool tubs, log houses on a mountain top, in-town cottages and Victorian B & Bs with marvelous breakfasts and first-rate service. Berkeley Springs Cottage Rentals offers 10% -15% off some properties for two nights while River House WV takes 10% off for a group of 3 ladies or more and throws in a plus free wild walk on Saturday. Berkeley Springs Inn Best Western has an eye-opening special price on one night lodging w/ breakfast, deluxe pedicure and manicure for two, and a bottle of champagne.
Although this is officially Hey, Girlfriend! weekend, here's a secret between girlfriends: in a town where many of the businesses are owned by women and the attractions are just what women like, it's always a celebration of girlfriends. Gather up sisters, cousins, college roommates and carpooling moms from all over the east and discover how much closer than anywhere Berkeley Springs is.
