Women love Berkeley Springs for a host of reasons from the splendid spas to safe streets and abundance of fun shopping and art.

This weekend, women are flocking to Cacapon State Park for their own girlfriend celebration. Arrive Friday evening in time for dessert, continue on Saturday with muffins and a variety of activities ranging from necklace making to zumba. There will be facials available all day. To help work off all the great food including a Saturday night buffet, use the outdoor wonders of the park including an 18-hole golf course and miles of mountain hiking trails. You can come for the weekend package or just for the day.

Back in town, there are always attractions that women love and on this weekend a couple special activities. Ownership has changed at the art and gift boutique, Lions Lair and there's a grand re-opening on Friday at 10am to see the new look. If you cannot come down then, drop by any time during the weekend and shop. Stop by next door to another new shop on the street - Rocks and Glass. If you want to actually CREATE art, head on out to Frog Valley Artisans on Saturday from 2-4pm for a productive fused glass class -- and to shop. More art shopping is on the list at Mountain Laurel Gallery on the corner of the square and Heath Studio Gallery at the north end of town. The new Berkeley Springs Memories has popular artist-designed Berk eley Springs branded souvenir items. The Vintage Kitchen on Mercer Street has expanded their showroom and products.

The most incredible art throughout May can be found at the Ice House Gallery now open on Fridays as well as Saturdays and Sundays -- each day from 11am to 5pm. The Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild has their spectacular Medallion Quilts show and sale overflowing the gallery and several other spaces in the Ice House. May is Quilt Month is a well deserved title for Berkeley Springs. While there, browse the Ice House Co-op Gallery showcasing more than 35 local artists. Crafters and artists take up residence in Berkeley Springs State Park on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Across the square, the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market on Sunday fr om 10am to 2pm offers a wide variety of spring produce and plants.

The spas in town are fully equipped to satisfy every desire from historic Roman Baths where you can splash around in a private bathing chamber in heated pure spring water to more types of massage, facials, runs, scrubs and wraps than you can imagine. There is Berkeley Springs Acupuncture to try and a special price on reflexology at Awakening Health Center on Saturday from noon to 3pm just so you can try it out. While at Awakening, attend Heart Meditation Techniques with Beatrice from 1 to 2:30 pm on Saturday. Also downtown on Saturday, is the afternoon wine tasting at Wilkes Street Wine Shop. Another fun activity is the Museum of the Berkeley Springs in the park open on Saturday and Sund ay where the historic bathing suit exhibit is always good for signs of relief.

There is plenty of choice nightlife including live music both Friday and Saturday night on the deck of Ambrae House accompanied by great appetizers, wines and food. Both Friday and Saturday are Steak Night at the Troubadour Lounge, a place devoted to Patsy Cline as centerpiece of their WV Country Music Hall of Fame. New WV music is featured there on Saturday night at 9pm when Stereo Spacecraft performs for Cinco de Mayo. Saturday evening at 8pm, the Fairfax Coffee House presents the incomparable Joe Herrmann playing traditional American and bluegrass along with David McGlaughlin and Marshall Wilborn. This is an amazing trio of fine musicians.

Popular nightlife includes the vintage Star Theatre showing American Reunion on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm. This movie is rated R for all the usual comedy reasons.

On Sunday afternoon, Panorama at the Peak's excellent brunch is highlighted by the musical prowess of singer/songwriter Larry Bish. Come early -- on Thursday -- and enjoy half-price burgers with this week's special burger being an authentic Gyro burger with lamb and sauce all made with local farm products. Peaches and cream is the special dessert. Lot 12 is another award-winning local restaurant using local farm ingredients and open for dinner all weekendlong. Also make plans to eat at Tari's Cafe serving outstanding food daily at lunch and dinner. Other dining experiences can be found by checking the full list and range from barbeque at Earth Dog Cafe to Fresh Fish Friday at Temptations. For special treats stop by Creekside Creamery for ice cream, Almost Heaven sweets for made-on-demand donuts and Temptations Too for baked goods.

Now, the big question is where to stay. Nothing but the best for Highlawn's guests. There are other fine B&Bs in town as well as an historic inn.
