Berkeley Springs is a love machine! What else can you say about a tiny place that has three times as many massage therapists as lawyers and as many outstanding restaurants as any hot block in Manhattan. Since V-Day is on a Tuesday and the weekend after is all about our favorite celebrity tourist, George Washington, we're talking about love now.

Before we launch into all the Valentine's weekend and Valentine's Day specials, let's cover a few other special events.

On Saturday at 9pm, the Troubadour Lounge introduces the area to Band-A-N-A playing music for country dancing. Fun at the Star Theatre this weekend is courtesy of Tom Cruise in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" with showings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at 8pm.

Since we're at Cacapon State Park, let's start with their love machine activities. Take a Sweetheart's Escape complete with lodging, meals, entertainment and miles of mountain hiking trails. On Valentine's Day itself, they offer a special filet and crabcake dinner. Wild things may choose the Gator Tail special at Angus and Ale which is tender alligator meat coated with house seasonings, fried and served with six pepper ranch.

If Victorian elegance and a lighted Valentine Tree is more to your taste, choose the six-course, silver service, one 7pm seating Hearts Aglow dinner at Highlawn Inn with quail, salmon, delectable dessert choices and complimentary Fisher Ridge wines. Reservations are essential.

There's some rocking fun at the American Legion on Saturday at 8pm with a Valentine's Dance featuring classic rock from The Stereo Spacecraft and Potomac Sound.

Stroll around town and visit all our cool shops searching for that perfect romantic gift. Look through thousands of items at our two antique malls and several shops as well as original local and American art at several locations including the Ice House Co-op Gallery, Mountain Laurel Gallery and Heath Studio Gallery. Nature Niche is offering free Valentine gift wrapping everyday from now through 5pm on Valentine's Day. You can also print a discount coupon from their website for one item to use when you visit through February 15.

Tari's Premier Cafe is offering their famous Seafood Lovers for 2 special on Valentine's Day with complimentary champagne and delectable dessert. Lot 12 is open on Tuesday (a rare event) for a fabulous three-course dinner complete with rose petals and other romantic trimmings. There are two seatings. Reservations are recommended for both places.

What can be more romantic than shared spa treatments. The Bath House Day Spa has a couples massage. Atasia Spa offers an herbal steam room, massage, whirlpool tubs for two and facials for both men and women. If your New Year's resolution is to treat yourself better, then choose Berkeley Springs with a full array of special packages in spas and lodging places.

Evening entertainment focuses on the re-opening of the Star Theatre showing "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm complete with its famous world class popcorn.

The big news all weekend long is 150 years old. The Country Inn and Berkeley Springs State Park are locations for the 6th Annual Bath-Romney Campaign Commemoration, a battle that occurred in 1862. On Saturday morning from 9 to 11am, presentations at the Country Inn include a performance by the National Park Service official fife and drum corps. From noon to 3pm, action shifts to Berkeley Springs State Park with living history reenactments focusing on meals, drilling, weapons firing and another performance by the fife and drums. At 2:30pm Stonewall Jackson is portrayed. Special candlelight tours move from the park to the Country Inn where Stonewall Jackson is again portrayed at 6:30pm. At 8pm, the Country Inn hosts a Victorian music recital. On Sunday, reenactment activities continue at the park beginning at 11am with a period church service and including the meals, drilling and firing activities repeated from Saturday. Stonewall Jackson appears at 1:30pm followed by the fife and drums. At 3pm, there is a final presentation about the battle at the Country Inn.

Diners can choose from more than half a dozen fine dining restaurants including Panorama at the Peak which dedicates the weekend to thanking its many happy customers with 50% off all entrees. Dining hours are lunch and dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Their famous view is open all the time. Diners can also choose from tasty specials and a popular menu at Tari's Cafe, open daily for lunch and dinner. Also check out offerings at Temptations Cafe, Ambrae House, the Country Inn and Angus and Ale as well as other eateries.

People have been coming to "take the waters" of Berkeley Springs for more than a century before Stonewall Jackson made his way through the area -- and continue today. The spas of Berkeley Springs are all open and ready to provide more than 50 treatments to remove that holiday stress ranging from massage and facials to an amazing menu of scrubs, rubs and wraps. The Bath House Day Spa offers a complimentary paraffin dip with any skin care or pedicure service. The Bath House is also partnering with Berkeley Springs Inn Best Western for a pampering package that includes lodging, breakfast and a deluxe pedicure and manicure. In addition to the show, Carol Barton, author of "The Pocket Paper Engineer" is giving a hands-on, all materials provided workshop at the Ice House on Sunday from 10am to 4pm teaching everything from basic pop-up structures to surprising three-dimensional constructions.

Just because it's winter does not mean outdoor fun is not available. In fact, hiking the mountains in January is a special wonder with the contours of the land more open to view, unhidden by foliage. Cacapon State Park remains the outdoor capital of the county whatever the season and its miles of mountain hiking trails are a choice destination including the park overlook which boasts a rare view of four states -- one of the only ones in the east. Standing on the east facing platform, on a clear winter day, it's easy to see Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

With no snow in the forecast, Berkeley Springs promises to be a popular destination for tween week celebrating -- that's tween Christmas and New Years. Shops and restaurants are open; the woods are perfect for hiking; and spas..... Well, spas are ready and waiting to relieve that holiday stress and tune you, beautify you and relax you for 2012. All the lodging places have their holiday decor still in place and many offer warm fires to bring romance to the stay.

West Virginia's only James Beard listed chef -- Damien Heath -- is satisfying his many fans by having Lot 12 Publick House open EVERY NIGHT for dinner including New Year's Eve -- and then it is vacation time. Lot 12 is closed in January so stock up on those fine tastes now. The Country Inn is also open daily serving three meals a day as well as having their spa in full swing and their outdoor garden a fanciful wonder in white lights.

Who is doing what on New Year's is always a big question -- and it has a big answer. Highlawn Inn is perfect for the romantic, intimate feeling with their special New Year's Eve Silver Service Dinner. Reservations are a must! You need not be staying at Highlawn to attend BUT, it is an ideal B&B to stay offering their exquisite food for breakfast each morning. Both Panorama at the Peak and Tari's Cafe are open for New Year's Eve as well as the next day. Panorama offers the music of Larry Bish both for New Year's Eve (last seating is 9pm) and New Year's Day with brunch served from 11am to last seating at 5pm.

The Country Inn goes all out for their New Year's Eve dinner and celebration featuring not only great food but the hit singer/songwriter Ernie Fields and his band performing everything from Motown to top 40 to jazz. Ernie is best known as the songwriter of "Some Kind of Wonderful." The celebration includes a toast at midnight followed by a breakfast buffet. Hillbilly Heaven has an all-out country style bargain New Year's Eve celebration complete with pig roast and barbecue, live music and designated drivers. Earth Dog Cafe celebrates with a DJ, prizes, appetizer buffet and free beverage ticket for everyone who comes dressed in black and white.

Berkeley Springs greets approaching winter with lots to do inside and out....and much of it revolves around the holiday season.

A great event for participatory fun is the Murder Mystery at Cacapon State Park on Saturday at 6:30pm. You can come for just dinner and the mystery or get a whole package that also includes a room at the lodge and buffet breakfast the next morning. No telling where you will wake up if you turn out to be the murderer -- or the victim. Music, dancing, playacting -- all led by the New World Theater Company.

The Country Inn becomes Christmas Central the next couple weekends offering carriage rides around the historic town on Saturday from noon to 5pm and Victorian Carolers from 5 to 6pm. From 1-3pm on Saturday folks can get their picture taken with Santa in Berkeley Springs State Park with all proceeds benefitting Parks & Rec. More holiday music can be heard at Union Chapel on Saturday at 7pm when the Community Choir presents its 3rd annual Home for the Holidays concert.

The Star Theatre chooses action and laughs with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller in the crime caper "Tower Heist."

It may not be holiday but it is great music -- bluegrass at Fairfax Coffee House on Saturday at 7pm played by the acoustic trio Banana Express. Rock out with The Main Street 3 at the Troubadour Lounge's Deer Hunters Dance on Saturday starting at 9pm. You don't have to be a deer hunter or even a dancer to head on out the ridge.

Needless to say, this weekend, like the next two, are all about holiday shopping -- and we have several suggestions in addition to encouraging you to explore the shopping page to see offerings of more than two dozen downtown area shops. Frog Valley Artisans, a little out of town begins their annual Christmas sale on Saturday and Sunday with all the art items from pottery and glass to metalwork and more reduced 15%. Jules Enchanting Gifts and Collectibles welcomes shoppers with excellent homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk all weekend. Sunday from 10am to 2pm marks the move of the Morgan County Farmers Market into the north end of the Old Factory Antique Mall. A special seasonal treat are the handmade evergreen wreaths. Buying local is easy in Berkeley Springs everyday especially with local artists on display in several locations from the outstanding Ice House Co-op Gallery to the equally alluring Heath Studio Gallery at the north end of town. And nothing beats an antique mall for discovering a tiny stocking stuffer. Fortunately, we have two malls as well as several individual shops -- you could spend all day just browsing for that special something from another time. One of those individual shops is Vintage Kitchen on Green St. where they are holding a Christmas Open House Friday through Monday and offering 25% off very collectible Homer Laughlin china made right here in WV.

In case you want to make a holiday gift that will stun and amaze your family and friends, plan to stay a little longer and stop by the Ice House for three great art classes. On Sunday, Baltimore paper artist David Kandel teaches two classes. From 10am to noon it's origami fabric folding and from 2-4pm, it's innovations in origami known as tessellation. On Monday from noon to 3pm, fabric artist Mary Klotz conducts a 3D paper sampler that is a "make and take" for a paper tree, pop-up word and a pop-up holiday card.

One excellent suggestion for a special holiday present is a gift certificate for spa treatments -- and you should sample the offerings first before choosing. So plan to spa hop this weekend trying out steams, baths, massages, facials and other unique bodywork treatments -- more than 50 different choices from five spas and several individual practitioners.

As you stroll through town, you'll notice historic structures including most of the downtown shops. Take the self-guided waking tour for information about what you are seeing and stop in at the museum on the second floor of the Roman Bath House to get oriented. Follow the Washington Heritage Trail National Scenic Byway for an outstanding driving tour that brings you drive-by looks at the splendid panorama of approaching winter. Speaking of panorama, that's a view not to be missed just west of town.

The outdoors remains a great place for adventure in between shopping sprees (or for the partner who rates shopping right up there with root canals as fun.) It's the final week of deer hunting season and there are plenty left as area drivers can tell you. Sleepy Creek Hunting and Fishing area is the largest public hunting ground is the county perched atop Sleepy Creek Mountain. Less deadly in intent is hiking through Cacapon State Park (off-limits to hunters) or, since the weather remains mild, playing a round or two of golf. You're guaranteed to see deer on the course.

Hungry yet? or is it still? Fortunately, our restaurants are year 'round so no worries about what is open. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner you can find the perfect menu from barbecue ribs at Earth Dog Cafe and Angus and Ale to delectable seafood at Temptations Cafe and Tari's Cafe. Ambrae House is the place to be for Sunday football with a ste amed shrimp and beverage special.
